Venezuela's Cryptocurrency

Alejandro Machado is known in Venezuela is the co-founder of the Open Money Initiative (OMI). The expat is reportedly hell-bent at helping his homeland while remaining hopeful about the world’s leading crypto.

Venezuela and Crypto

Interestingly, people in the country have not necessarily abandoned the inflation-riddled bolivar, which is something Machado expected right at the get-go. This is simply due to the fact that it is hard to use crypto within the country’s borders. According to the executive, even if no one desires “the bolivar,” people in the country need it in order to survive.

Machado’s non-profit OMI, which is based in San Francisco, will be working alongside crypto industry incumbents. One of these is none other than LocalBitcoins, which is a peer-to-peer exchange. The joint initiative is an attempt to making digital currencies more useful for individuals who in distressed economic climates, with Venezuela being the most perfect example.

The OMI co-founder that the most important thing here is access to products is the number, which Venezuelans need on a daily basis. So far, people in the country are fond of using BTC for things like freelance earnings, remittances, and savings. As for users for other digital currencies, there are those who simply rely on local ambassadors for the goal of fiat liquidity.

The Need For Cryptos

According to official reports, Jamaal Montasser, who is also a co-founder at OMI, hired a number of Venezuelan recruiters in order to gain more insight into diverse demographics. The decision to do so is also part of a plan to obtain over 40 participants for studies designed to explore how individuals utilize money in times of political and social turmoil.

There is one refugee that claims to be beaten if he will not decide to sell coffee for the government-sanctioned price in bolivar. Another individual in the country also reveals smuggling back U.S. dollars in her hair and underwear.

The aforementioned circumstances only provide that cryptos could be an ideal option. But as far as OMI’s research is concerned, users tend to have habits and/or circumstances that current BTC wallets do not really account for.

OMI claimed that there are things that people wanted to purchase, but they simply could not do so with BTC. And while there are merchants will to accept the said crypto, one cannot do the same thing when it comes to basic or staple goods.
