The granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth, Princess Eugenie as well as the United States Ambassador for Anti-Human Trafficking John Richmond both showed their vote of confidence about using technology such as mobile apps as well as Blockchain to address the serious issue of human trafficking.

Increased Internet Usage for Human Trafficking

The OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe) hosted the conference in Vienna, Austria where the Princess and Ambassador Richmond spoke. It was during this conference that experts in the field stated that the increase in the use of the internet had also given human traffickers a greater opportunity to exploit possible targets.

Princess Eugenie was the person who pointed out that modern technology could also be used to help fight this evil. The Princess is the co-founder of the Anti-Slavery Collective, an initiative focused on creating awareness about and also abolishing modern slavery.

In her speech she said that she had learned about how Blockchain technology was having a significant impact on supply-chain management. She added that she also came to know about how an app in Britain could help the public report modern slavery that was taking place at car washes.

Ambassador Richmond also noted that while technology on its own could not put a stop to human trafficking, it could be used to create tools that can help in the fight against this evil.

Using Blockchain to End Forced Labor

The app the Princess was referring to was created for a joint initiative by the Coca Cola Co., the US Department of State as well as the Safe Car Wash app. This initiative was launched in March last year, and its focus has been to use Blockchain technology to create a secured work registry.

The Safe Car Wash App was launched in June last year via a partnership between the Catholic Church in England and Wales and the Church of England after the organizations found that there were almost 1,000 cases of forced or slave labor at car washes across the United Kingdom.

Now, with the help of the Safe Car Wash App, users are able to enter their location and then also mark off various indicators that there could be an issue to slave labor at a particular car wash.

In the US, the House of Representatives pass a bill earlier this year that would form a commission that would explore how cryptocurrencies as well as online marketplaces could be used to fight the war against drug and sex trafficking in the country.
