Colorado To Explore Blockchain Use In Agriculture

Lawmakers in the state of Colorado in the United States are planning to make use of blockchain technology. Basically, it wants to utilize its application to the world of agriculture. Here is everything about it in a nutshell.

According to the official report, the state sees a crucial role of blockchain technology in the agriculture sector. There are at least four representatives and senators who agreed to work together in filing the bipartisan house bill 1247, which brings forth the idea of the Department of Agriculture forming an advisory group. By doing so, it hopes to further its plans for determining the vast potentials of using the said technology in agricultural processes and/or operations.

Interestingly, the Colorado lawmakers were able to pinpoint a handful of blockchain use cases. This includes having the ability to improve traceability of products, all of which are deemed as “from farm to shelf,” control of inventory, and the much-needed monitoring when it comes to in-field conditions (e.g. soil quality, weather, water sustainability, etc.).

The group is also expected to perform other tasks, such as maintaining data solely for production and listing inventory equipment. Even more so, it is expected to verify certification and data of organic items, as well as ordering and tracking resources (e.g. seed and fertilizer). All of these processes will be performed through the use of blockchain and the group will be in charge of studying each of them.

As proposed by the lawmakers from Colorado, the group is going to report all findings and recommendations – including any studies relating to the project – back to the general assembly. Basically, these would help in any legislation and must be submitted on January 15 next year.
