A new trading card game is challenging the supremacy of the iconic Magic: The Gathering. The Black Lotus card from the Magic still remains the most prized card in the collectible card gaming arena, an early version of which sold for a record $87,000 in July this year.

A week later that record was challenged by another trading card. This card – Hyperion – belongs to a brand new Blockchain based game called Gods Unchained, and it sold for a sum of 146 ETH at an auction, which means the card was worth $60,000 at the time of the sale.

Gods Unchained

Gods Unchained is due to go live on the Ethereum network in the final quarter of this year and has already generated massive hype in the gaming industry. Fuel Games, the game’s creators, already raised $2.4 million in the first funding round for this game.

According to one of the investors – Continue Capital – the reason they invested in this game is because it is one of the first Blockchain based games that has combined high quality gaming with complete ownership of game assets.

According to Fuel Games’ CEO James Ferguson, what makes Gods Unchained unique is the fact that it operates on a completely decentralized platform and its cards are actually non-fungible ERC-721 ETH tokens. This means that unlike other centralized digital games where users are only given a license to use items – which can be changed at will by the game developers – Gods Unchained cards are owned and controlled only by the holder of their cryptographic key. These cards cannot be changed or taken away by anyone.

Blockchain Tech in the Gaming Industry

The fact that users now have complete control of their cards is a huge plus for the game. Additionally, the security offered by the Blockchain makes the game even more attractive.

Ferguson states that their company’s main goal is to attract players to Gods Unchained, which, by extension, would mean that they would also be attracted to the crypto asset space. Since gaming has now becomes such a huge part of people’s lives, to the extent that gaming is now also a profession, it is the perfect vehicle to introduce users to the cryptocurrency and Blockchain space.

However, Blockchain technology isn’t going to be disrupting the gaming industry any time soon. While the immutability offered by the tech is appealing, the quality of gameplay is not. This is because of the lack of scalability on the current Blockchains such as Ethereum, which has slow processing times as well as high transaction costs.

Which is why the developers of Gods Unchained, while wanting to attract users to cryptos, have kept their gameplay off-chain. This strategy seems to be working. Fuel Games has already sold over $1.3 million worth of cards in Ether – even before the official launch of Gods Unchained.
