Samsung’s new phone, the Galaxy S10 was formally unveiled on Wednesday, and according to the company’s press release, the new phone will include private key storage for cryptocurrencies.

Rumors vs. Reality

Before the Galaxy S10 was revealed on Wednesday, the market was abuzz with rumors about the device’s possible configuration and whether it would be able to support crypto wallets as well as Dapps.

In fact, in January, images that supposedly showed a Samsung Blockchain Keystore on the new phone surfaced. These images showed that the new phone had an ETH (Ethereum) wallet function in a list that was titled Cryptocurrencies Supported. However, these features have now proven to be just rumors, because the unveiling did not refer to any of them.

What was revealed was that new phone includes a brand-new function that has been created for cryptocurrency users.

In its press release, Samsung stated that the Galaxy S10 was built with the Samsung Knox platform, which offers the phone defense-grade mobile security.

The company also said that the device had a secure storage that was backed by hardware that would be able to house users’ private keys for mobile services that were enabled by Blockchain technology.

Further details about Samsung Knox, however are not yet available and the Korean technology giant was could not be reached for comments.

Smartphones Designed for Crypto Users Increasing

The Galaxy S10 is now joining the growing ranks of smartphones that are being designed keeping crypto users in mind. Already in the market are the HTC EXODUS 1 as well as the Finney by Sirin Labs’. Both these smartphones were announced in 2018.

The EXODUS 1 will provide support for multiple Blockchains, which includes BTC as well as ETH. This smartphone will use Brave as its default browser.

However, unlike HTC and Sirin Labs, Samsung is the largest smartphone maker in the world. So, the launch of a phone that has a Blockchain function will see the widest possible distribution.

Another factor in Samsung’s favor is that the Korean giant is launching 4 variations of the S10, targeting a much wider audience than a single phone could. HTC’s EXODUS 1 and Sirin’s Finney can only be bought with cryptocurrencies. The EXODUS 1 can only be bought with BTC or ETH, while the Finney can only be bought with Sirin’s own native crypto called Sirin Token.
