The U.S. city of Denver is expected to use a blockchain system in order to store and check votes. The implementation, according to the official report, is expected to take place during the upcoming municipal elections come May. Here is everything about the news in a nutshell.

Introducing The Blockchain Voting App

Denver, Colorado said that it would soon implement a pilot program designed specifically to enable overseas voters and military personnel on active duty – including their respective eligible dependents – to vote. But unlike the traditional method of voting, this time, it will be through the use of a blockchain-based mobile device app. The program has been made possible through the city’s collaboration with Tusk Philanthropies and Voatz.

Voatz’s technology, in particular, is not the first time to be used in all of West Virginia. Before, it was also utilized during the state’s very own primary and general elections last year, which involved active-duty military personnel.

Since the launch, the Overstock-backed company has performed more than 30 pilots, all of which have been successful so far. Even more so, it was able to cast more than 15,000 votes, one that is deemed to be its largest in terms of election by far.

More Transparent Process

The deputy of elections at the Denver Office of Clerk and Recorder named Jocelyn Bucaro, in a statement, claimed that the Denver Elections Division has made a name out of its efforts to make voting much easier. More importantly, the division has managed to be successful in providing a more transparent process for individuals via technology.

She adds that participating in the upcoming program perfectly fits into their mission. She and her team believe that the technology is capable of making voting a lot easier and more secure. Not only is it going to benefit activity-duty military and overseas individuals, but it will also cover people with disabilities. The latter, in particular, could gain the ability to vote independently and even privately. They can do so in the comfort of using their own mobile devices’ assistive technology.

For eligible voters to participate in the pilot program, they must start by filing an absentee ballot request. From there, they will have to complete an authentication process via the mobile app of Voatz. If approved, they can readily submit their ballot from March 23 to May 27, which is basically the election day of Denver. Using the app suggests that voters have the ability to avoid the necessity to print and scan any paperwork, something that they would be needing once they decide to file a normal absentee ballot.
